How to Fight the Winter Blues

When winter hits (especially if you live in the north), the shorter days and chilly temperatures can start to get you down. But there are simple things you can do to cheer yourself up as you go through your day. Try these tips the next time you're longing for spring:

Get outside: The lack of sunlight is part of the reason we're more likely to feel down in the winter. So take advantage of days when the sun is out, and make time for a walk outside in the morning or between technique classes. Research shows that sunlight can raise your spirits by increasing levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates mood.

Eat Omega-3s: Along with their many other health benefits, omega-3 fatty acids contain mood-boosting nutrients, according to a study published in The American Journal of Psychiatry. Find them in walnuts, flaxseeds or fish like wild salmon.

Socialize: Research has found that people are happier when they spend time socializing each day. Try having lunch with a friend from your studio or making a plan to meet non-dance friends after rehearsal.

How Can I Stay Motivated While Training at Home?

Ethan Ahuero was having a good year: he was in his first season dancing with Kansas City Ballet II and had been presented with the opportunity to choreograph on the second company. "The day before we shut down I had a rehearsal, and I was so happy," Ahuero says. "The piece was coming together and this was the first time I felt really proud of my creative process."
