Reel Advice: Audition DVD Tips

November 28, 2001

When auditioning in person is just not possible, sending out a reel is your next best option. But make sure your video stands out for the right reasons.

1. Pay special attention to what a school or company asks for. If the directions tell you to show a barre and center, don’t give a solo. Show you can listen; nobody wants an unruly dancer.

2. Leave your sequined leotard at home and opt for a flattering solid cut—you don’t want the viewers to be distracted by glitter and miss your adagio! Also, pin your hair back neatly and tuck in those pointe shoe ribbons. The more professional you look, the better.

3. Plan everything out before you start filming. Choose combinations and music that will show off your strengths. And be sure to practice before you hit record—the more comfortable you are, the more your personality will shine through.

4. Even if you were having a better turning day on Wednesday, do not edit those pirouettes into Monday’s footage! It will be obvious. And it will tell the viewer that you lack endurance and consistency.

5. Your brother may have a video camera, but this is a job for a professional, preferably one who knows ballet. They’ll know how to capture your best angles.
