Cedar Lake's "New World"

Published in the June/July 2009 issue.

Choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui describes his imaginative, multilayered work as "storybooks in motion." This July at the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival , the accomplished dancers of Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet will tackle Cherkaoui's latest story: Orbo Novo (New World), set to original score by Polish composer Syzmon Brzoska. The title refers to a phrase used to describe America in a 1493 letter by Pietro Martire d'Anghiera--a fitting inspiration for the first piece Cherkaoui, one of Europe's most popular choreographers, has made for an American company. Orbo Novo  runs July 8-12 at the Ted Shawn Theatre: www.jacobspillow.org. -MF
