The live ballet premieres Wednesday night, with none other than Gillian Murphy in the title role. Stay tuned for details about the film's release.
The Royal Ballet just announced today that Liam Scarlett has been appointed the company's first-ever artist in residence. The position will allow him to focus solely on creating work for The Royal (his last appearance as a dancer will be in the current run of Swan Lake). He joins resident choreographer Wayne McGregor and artistic associate Christopher Wheeldon as one of three dancemakers who will now be making work on regular basis for The Royal. It's a sign of the company's serious commitment to new ballet choreography.

Want to keep your inner cookie monster in check this holiday season? Don't deny yourself treats—just cut them up into smaller bites so you don't go overboard. A recent study at Arizona State University found that the optical illusion of cutting up a bagel into four pieces made test subjects feel fuller; those given a quartered bagel ate less bagel, and ate less at a complimentary lunch afterwards. Fewer calories now, fewer calories later: win-win.
The Joffrey’s Anastacia Holden is more than just a dancer; she’s a force in her community. In 2010, she co-founded EMBARC, Inc, a non-profit that offers cultural experiences for high school students in Chicago’s historically underserved neighborhoods. Through partnerships between public schools, local businesses and arts organizations, EMBARC offers teens exposure to the fine arts, takes them to visit local farms, gets them involved in their communities.
Are you an energy drink fiend? You might want to think twice before getting your next fix. On Monday, the FDA announced that it was investigating five deaths and a heart attack that were allegedly caused by caffeine toxicity after drinking Monster Energy.
Nikiya’s forbidden love is taken to a whole different level in the Royal Danish Ballet’s new production of La Bayadère. At the Guggenheim’s Works and Process showing, artistic director Nikolaj Hubbe spoke about RDB’s restaging, and his dancers performed excerpts wearing costumes by Richard Hudson (who also designed costumes for The Lion King).
He may be British, but Christopher Wheeldon was just given one of America's oldest honors. Earlier this month, the choreographer was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, founded in 1780. He joins a list of such notables as Thomas Jefferson, Washington Irving, Duke Ellington, Mark Morris and thousands of others. Congrats!
Some days, it seems like however much I eat, my stomach just won't fill up. One possible culprit? A lack of Zzzs.
A recent study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that four nights of sleep deprivation reduced insulin sensitivity in fat cells by 30 percent—which means the body's producing that much less leptin, a hormone that inhibits our appetite. On top of that, previous research has also shown that getting only four hours of sleep a night slows our metabolism. Double oof.
