Fascinating new research from Harvard Business School found that people who spent a few minutes typing on a small, handheld gadget were only half as assertive in follow-up tests as those who had typed on a desktop computer. They were also far more meek on an additional test that measured power and self-confidence.

Contemporary choreographer Josh Beamish has been all over the ballet news lately thanks to his work as one of four dancer/choreographers in Wendy Whelan's "Restless Creature" project. But he's actually spent the past two years setting movement on a whole gaggle of ballet dancers, including Pacific Northwest Ballet's Carla Körbes and Lindsi Dec, Royal Winnipeg Ballet's Jo-Ann Sundermeier and National Ballet of Canada's Harrison James. These performers are part of MOVE: the company, his troupe of rotating dancers.

"Breaking Pointe" fans have gotten used to The CW exaggerating Ballet West's backstage drama. Sometimes, the tortured plot lines are simply laughable (that Beckanne-Chase-Zach lover's quarrel, anyone?). But in capturing the company's opening-night anxieties in last night's episode, it was finally spot-on.

 

James Sewell Ballet is a tiny, but mighty gem of the Twin Cities arts scene. This year marks the contemporary ballet troupe's 20th anniversary season, and highlights include the men’s duet from Lar Lubovitch’s Concerto Six Twenty-Two, as well as Inferno, a piece that Sewell has been dreaming of since before he even launched the company. Pointe recently asked Sewell about where his company's come from and what it's up to now.

 

What was your initial vision for James Sewell Ballet?

It's a question every dancer asks herself: If I want to perform my best, should I eat before or after rehearsal? The answer: Both.

 

According to an article in The New York Times, it turns out that eating easily digestible carbohydrates (think white bread or white rice) in the hour before exercising helps athletes work out for longer. That means your fouettés won't lose steam by hour two or three in the studio.
