There’s nothing better than the feeling you get when you walk into your favorite dance store. You're surrounded by shelves of pointe shoes, racks of warm ups and—my personal favorite—gorgeous leotards. But with all of those leo options, it can be a daunting task to pick out your favorites. Which will make you look your best? To help, we’ve made a list for the best leotards to flatter every body shape. When you feel comfortable in your dancewear, it can do wonders for your confidence, and in-turn, affect your performance in class, rehearsal and even auditions.

We all know someone who can’t survive without her cup of coffee as well as that dancer who swears green tea is her health savior. But is one truly better than the other? We compared the two to see which is the best choice for a dancers’ overall well-being.

Cincinnati Ballet has tapped some high-powered talent for its 50th-anniversary season: Christopher Stowell, who recently stepped down as artistic director of Oregon Ballet Theatre, and William Whitener, who recently left his Kansas City Ballet artistic director post, will both join the company as guest ballet masters, along with Balanchine repetiteur Paul Boos.

There’s nothing worse than pulling on your tights and watching a run make its way down your leg. All of the harsh wear we put our tights through on a daily basis can cause them to rip. But there are a few simple steps you can take to help extend their lifespan.

 

  • Read the label: Make sure your tights are made of a sturdy material, like Nylon and Lycra, to ensure a strong hold but also elasticity.

  • Wear the right size. Tights that are too small are more likely to run when they’re overstretched.

Strategic snacking can help your body get through, and recover from, an intense dance class or rehearsal. But what foods should you be eating when?

 

Before class, you need to fuel for maximum energy. That's best achieved by eating a snack with a 2:1 ratio of carbohydrates to protein anywhere from four hours to 30 minutes before class. The carbs will provide the energy you need to dance your best, while the bit of protein will keep your stomach from grumbling by the time you reach petit allégro.

 

Yesterday, Ballet San Jose named former American Ballet Theatre principal Jose Manuel Carreño its new artistic director, effective September 3, 2013. As one of the most admired dancers of the past two decades, Carreño brings plenty of experience to the job, and strengthens the growing relationship between BSJ and ABT.
 
BSJ has changed direction over the last few years. In December 2011, it announced a partnership with ABT that would allow the company to use ABT’s National Training Curriculum for students.
