College Ready

In addition to being a Pointe magazine intern, I am also a New York City high school senior, which means I am currently applying to college. Although the applications and paperwork are the same for most schools, I am in the unique position of applying to college as a dancer.

Many colleges ask applicants with a strong talent in the visual or performing arts to hand in their application with something called an “artistic supplement.” For dancers, this normally consists of a five- to 10-minute videotape that shows off technique and ability. The tape can show part of class, one or two variations, or even a little speech about why you dance and what dance means for you. I recently made mine, and I included a variation from Le Corsaire and a variation from Coppélia. I think that the artistic supplement is a great way to show colleges that there is something more to me than my academic abilities. Think about making one when you apply to college!
